Kingfisher Class
Hello everyone and welcome to the start of the 2026-2027 school year! I am excited to welcome our new Kingfishers to class so we can all get to know each other and start our learning.
Our PE for this term are Mondays and Tuesday so please make sure your child has their PE kit and a water bottle on these days.
Please check the Home Learning page for this term's home learning projects and invitations, both will be uploaded there. We will do our presentations in the final two weeks of the term. If you have any questions about the projects feel free to email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Our topics for this term
In Maths we are getting started with reviewing our number formation and recognition before we move into our place value units for this term.
The Y1s will be working on recognising and counting numbers within ten, comparing groups and numbers and using number lines and part whole models.
The Y2s will be working on recognising and counting our numbers within twenty, recognising tens and ones in numbers greater than ten, partitioning numbers to 100, comparing numbers, and finishing with number lines and fact families.
In English we will be starting with reviewing our letter formation and using our writing resources before we move on to our two units this term. First we will be using the Julia Donaldson story, The Gruffalo, to create an information poster. For this we will be learning to use our adjectives, labelling and caption writing. Following this we will be looking at the short film The Rhythm of Water and creating an instruction manual. For this we will use our expanded noun phrases and sequential instructions.
Science this term we will be looking at what animals and human need to live an be healthy. We will learn to create a suitable habitat for chickens, recognise and match offspring from different animals, understand what humans and animals would need to survive on a desert island, and recognising the importance of exercise and healthy diets for humans.
This term our RWE will be studying the Christian story of Genesis from the Bible to understand how many Christians believe the world was created and how they give thanks to their God.
Geography will be understanding maps of the world and the information they show. We will learn to name the oceans and continents on a globe, recognise and find the equator and the poles on a map, recognising and learning the difference between climate zones and recognising the countries of the United Kingdom.
In Art we will be looking at how artists explore the world and collect items for inspiration. We will then learn to use different drawing techniques in our own piece of art.
For Computing this term we will be developing our mouse and trackpad skills using a chromebook.
Our music will be learning to read and sing different sound patterns as a class.
PE will be learning to work together as a team and developing our skills at dribbling and passing balls with our hands.
This term our PE days will be on Monday and Tuesday.
On Mondays and Tuesdays children should come into school wearing their PE kits. As a reminder, this should be a white t-shirt, black or navy shorts/joggers (weather dependent), and their school sweatshirt or fleece. Long hair should be tied back, and earrings should be covered or removed. Please do not send your child to school in non-school uniform items on PE days, such as hoodies or other sportswear from clubs.
On the first Wednesday of each month, with the odd exception, we would like to invite parents, carers or any family member dropping off a Kingfisher Class child to come into class before registration and sit alongside them for a few minutes. 'Welcome Wednesday' is an opportunity to share in the children's work, read with them, or simply discuss the current learning summarised on our classroom working walls. We hope this will become a precious and rewarding 10 minutes for the whole school community to get together regularly in class. We hope to see you there!
Please do look at the General Information page where you will find a summary of this half term's learning, an example timetable and lots of other useful information.
