    Kingfisher Class

Welcome to 2026 and our Spring 1 term everyone, I hope it was a lovely holiday for you all and that there’s been lots of family, fun, and rest for everyone over the last two weeks! We’re going to have a fantastic half term these next few weeks.

Important note for the upcoming half term. Our PE days have changed to Tuesdays and Fridays. These days should remain for the rest of Spring term.

As always remember to check the Home Learning page for this term's home learning projects. We will do our presentations in the final two weeks of the term. We had a lot of really fantastic presentations at the end of the half term so I am excited to see what everyone chooses this one! There is also useful advice and resources for extra practice you can do at home to help support your child's learning.

    Our topics for this year

In Maths we are going to be continuing our work with addition and subtraction before we move into starting our multiplication and division unit. During this time the students will also be starting our unit on money.

In English we will be starting with a unit on letter writing with a focus on using our non negotiables, commanding statements, exclamations, and questions. We will also be focusing on use of our neat cursive handwriting in our books across all subjects. Later this term we will be creating an instruction text using equipment lists, bullet points, and commanding statements.

Science this term will be focused on studying the senses humans have, specifically the experience of being without a sense and the way senses are taught in early education. As part of this unit we will be visiting the Cambridge Science Centre to take part in a workshop to help with our experience using our senses.

This term our RWE will be looking at understanding how many Christians view their god and what qualities they assign to them. We will be using the story of Noah and the Whale to understand how Christians can learn about their God from the Bible, and listening to hymns to examine how Christianity can be taught through music.

History this term will be looking at the life of Rosa Parks and how her actions affected the lives of others. The students will be learning to draw conclusions from primary sources, use evidence to understand cause and effect in history, and create a class exhibit about the life of Rosa Parks.

In Art we will be working on print making using different patterns and materials, as well as exploring the world for artistic inspiration.

Computing will be examining how we can put our skills to use understanding and creating algorithms. We will also look at looking for problems within these algorithms and learn the process of debugging.

Music will focusing on building on our understanding of pitch and how we can create music using musical instruments and our voices.

PE we are learning to use our skills in dance, focused on the idea of exploration, and learning to improve our control and ability using a ball with our feet.

This term our PE days will be on Tuesday and Friday

On these days children should come into school wearing their PE kits. As a reminder, this should be a white t-shirt, black or navy shorts/joggers (weather dependent), and their school sweatshirt or fleece. Long hair should be tied back, and earrings should be covered or removed. Please do not send your child to school in non-school uniform items on PE days, such as hoodies or other sportswear from clubs.

On the first Wednesday of each month, with the odd exception, we would like to invite parents, carers or any family member dropping off a Kingfisher Class child to come into class before registration and sit alongside them for a few minutes.  'Welcome Wednesday' is an opportunity to share in the children's work, read with them, or simply discuss the current learning summarised on our classroom working walls.  We hope this will become a precious and rewarding 10 minutes for the whole school community to get together regularly in class. We hope to see you there!

Please do look at the General Information page where you will find a summary of this half term's learning, an example timetable and lots of other useful information.
