  • Home Learning

Home learning plays an important part in supporting the progress children make in class. Daily reading is essential — this might be children reading to you, reading together, or you sharing a story with them. Listening to stories is just as valuable as practising reading aloud, and building this into everyday routines makes a real difference.

Alongside regular reading, children are expected to work on their half-termly home learning project. Details of each project can be found in the overview below. Dates for children to present will be sent out later in the half-term.

You’ll also find some additional resources further down this page to help support learning at home.

    Reading

If you are looking for reading recommendations, the following links have some great suggestions organised by age, ability and interest:

    Book Trust Bookfinder

    Books for Topics

Penguin - books for 7-9 year olds

    Times Tables

By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12 and will take the national Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in the summer term. We practise times tables regularly in class, but short, frequent practice at home makes a huge difference.

After Christmas, we will begin a weekly times tables quiz to help children prepare. In the meantime, Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) is a great way to practise, alongside a few other fun resources:

Hit the Button (Top Marks) – matching and recall games

BBC Supermovers – dance and movement songs

Maths Frame MTC Simulator – practice test

    White Rose Booklets

If you would like to support your child with their maths learning, White Rose Maths (the scheme that forms the basis for our Maths lessons) have provided free workbooks for each unit throughout the school year. These will generally reflect the work children will be completing in class throughout this unit. Used in conjunction with the termly Curriculum Overview and school progression documents, these will give you a clear understanding of what your child will be learning in each unit this year.
