Kingfisher Y2

Kingfisher Class

Welcome back everyone, I hope we had a lovely and relaxing week off! We had a lovely time last term and I am looking forward to more fun and learning over the next few weeks.

Our PE days have changed to Tuesdays and Fridays. These days should remain for the rest of Spring term.

As always remember to check the Home Learning page for this term's home learning projects and invitations, both are uploaded there. We will do our presentations in the final two weeks of the term. We had a lot of really fantastic presentations at the end of the half term so I am excited to see what everyone chooses this one! There is also useful advice and resources for extra practice you can do at home to help support your child's learning.

Our topics for this term

In Maths we are going to be continuing our work on multiplication and division, starting to work on our 2s, 5s, and 10s times tables to finish off the unit. We will then begin our measuring unit, working on length and height as well as mass, capacity, and temperature.

In English we will be starting by writing our own descriptive narrative based on the book Ravi's Roar using our subordination words and our past tense writing. Later in the term we will be looking at poetry and learning to write our own descriptive poem to finish the term.

Science this term will be focused on studying how we measure the weather, looking at rain fall and windspeed, and how the weather affects our day to day lives and the world in general. We will look at weather news reports and collect our own data to understand the weather at Barton further.

This term our RWE will be looking at understanding the lessons and symbols Christians associate with the holiday of Easter. We will look back at the story of Easter itself while looking at common symbols found in churches in preparation for the holiday. We will also look at how Christians connect the ideas of sin and forgiveness to the story of Easter.

Geography this term will be looking at the city of Luxor in Egypt and understanding the similarities and differences between that city and Barton. We will look at using globes and atlases to locate continents and countries, differentiating and spotting human and physical resources, and presenting this information to those who might want to visit Luxor, Egypt.

In DT we will be working on creating our own self supporting structures by making functional pencil pots for our classroom. We will achieve this by planning, choosing materials, and creating these structures in class.

Computing will continue from our computing last term by learning how we can create and debug algorithms on chromebooks. We will be spotting algorithms on programs and using them to create our own maps and games.

Music will continue our work on pitch from last term and continue by creating contrasting dynamics within our music.

PE we are learning to use our racket, bat, and ball skills to show control in games that use these resources. We will also be learning to create and follow pathways using our gymnastic skills.

This term our PE days will be on Tuesday and Friday

On these days children should come into school wearing their PE kits. As a reminder, this should be a white t-shirt, black or navy shorts/joggers (weather dependent), and their school sweatshirt or fleece. Long hair should be tied back, and earrings should be covered or removed. Please do not send your child to school in non-school uniform items on PE days, such as hoodies or other sportswear from clubs.

On the first Wednesday of each month, with the odd exception, we would like to invite parents, carers or any family member dropping off a Kingfisher Class child to come into class before registration and sit alongside them for a few minutes.  'Welcome Wednesday' is an opportunity to share in the children's work, read with them, or simply discuss the current learning summarised on our classroom working walls.  We hope this will become a precious and rewarding 10 minutes for the whole school community to get together regularly in class. We hope to see you there!

Please do look at the General Information page where you will find a summary of this half term's learning, an example timetable and lots of other useful information.
