Myths, Legends and Beliefs - Autumn 2010

Print

Item added: Friday, 10 September 2010

DragonOver the next term, Class 4 will be following the IPC unit of work entitled Myths, Legends and Beliefs. The Learning Goals for this are set out very clearly in three areas:

  • The subjects of the curriculum – the learning goals for these subjects follow very closely the objectives in the National Curriculum programmes of study and in many cases are more challenging
  • Personal Development – the characteristics which will help the children become independent responsible learners
  • International Understanding – which will help the children develop a sense of the independence of their own country and culture and the interdependence between countries and cultures

Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects.

In Society (PSHE) we'll be:

  • Finding out what myths and legends are
  • Looking closer at examples of myths and legends
  • Looking at the myths and legends of our partner country, Spain

In History we'll be:

  • Researching societies that are well known for their myths and legends
  • Comparing our country to other societies
  • Finding out about major events in the past

In Music we'll be

  • Finding out about music that has been inspired by Myths and Legends
  • Composing our own music to show a story that we have written

In Art we'll be

  • Finding out how artists use paintings and other methods to show myths and legends
  • Looking more closely at the art of Ancient Egypt
  • Producing our own piece of art to represent a story that we have written

Internationally we will be:

  • Finding out how stories around the world are both the same and different
  • Finding out how myths and legends have affected large areas of the world
  • Researching stories from different countries

In addition to our IPC based themes, some areas of the curriculum will continue to be taught discretely.

On Mondays Class 4 will be taught by Mrs Cowell. She will teach RE and Science. In RE the children will be covering 'Being a Muslim' and 'Islam – Special Places'. Mrs Cowell will also be covering the Literacy unit 'Stories from other cultures' through the RE curriculum so look forward to some very interesting anecdotes from your children. In Science, the topic will be Sound and the children will be carrying out related investigations. The second half of term will be focussing on 'How we see things'.

Children will work individually, with a friend, in a small group or as part of a large group, researching, interpreting and presenting information and ideas. Much of the work will be done through ICT where the children will be expected to develop their skills. We will become very familiar with Word, Publisher, Movie Maker and Power Point. We will also be encouraging the children to make their own films.

There will be opportunities for participatory role play and presentations to develop speaking and listening skills. We will be checking, assessing and evaluating how well your child has learned through particular activities throughout the unit and by asking children to explain their work.

We may ask for your support in helping your child with this unit in different ways. Please support and advise your child with your interest, experiences and enthusiasm, but do not complete the work on his or her behalf! It would be lovely if you would share you own favourite myths and legends with them.

If you have any comments about the work your child is doing please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you
