The beginning of the school day

BellChildren in Class 2 are expected to take responsibility for their own possessions and the things they need to do. No child should need to come into school before the bell goes. When the bell rings, the children should stand still and on the second bell, line up immediately. The class teacher will then lead in the class. Should your child arrive after the outside door has been locked, please ensure that they enter school via the main entrance. If they are late, parents need to report to the office to register and confirm their child's lunch arrangements. Space in the cloakroom is limited and it would help if their bags were not too large. It also helps them immensely if you could ensure that a hook is sewn into coats to enable them to be hung up. Any money or letters in envelopes should be brought to school in your child’s blue book bag and handed to the teacher at registration. Please ensure that any money is in a named envelope with all your child’s details. Money should only be brought into school on Mondays and Fridays.

At the end of the day

HomeThe class teacher or TA will lead the children out, through the playground corridor door. They must stay with the teacher until parents arrive. Any child not collected straight away will be brought to wait in the library area. Please could you advise the school via the office or the class teacher directly if there are any changes to the usual arrangements regarding the collection of your child/ren. This will ensure that all of the children go home with the correct person. We often give the children letters to take home so please check your child’s blue book bag daily.

Mathematics

Maths symbolsEvery day the children will have Literacy and Numeracy lessons. In the numeracy hour we will be following mixed Year 1/2 plans which cover all the concepts. It would be helpful if you could encourage your child with number recognition and counting at home. Sometimes there will be a maths home learning sheet given out on a Friday which links with the work we have been doing and it would be valuable if you could support your child with this.

Literacy

Letters on chalkboardIn the Literacy hour we will be developing our writing and reading and spelling skills with word work and sentence work. During each term we will look at different types of texts. Supporting this will be our daily reading and phonics sessions.

Reading

Reading bookDuring the school week we will aim to listen to your child read at least twice. Your child is able to choose books from the wooden boxes to bring home to read with you whenever they like. They will also bring home a book from the scheme at the beginning and at the end of the week. At the beginning of term your child can choose the books from the scheme s/he would like to read, starting with the simplest form. As the scheme progresses they follow an order which develops in story, character and difficulty.

Home Learning

phonicsReading at home with your child is invaluable and is seen as a large part of their Home Learning. It would be helpful if you could write a comment and take note of the stage your child is at in their reading records. Reading at home should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience. If your child is too tired at the end of the day to read it is best not to force the issue. Reading at a different time of the day may be more beneficial. Whilst reading with your child it is important to allow them to sound out the letters. However if they become stuck it is also fine for you to read the words or sound out the letters for them. Encourage your child to read the pictures. This often helps them to think of the next word and content of the story.

We will also be giving your child weekly spellings to learn. These will be sent home on a piece of paper on a Friday and tested the following Friday. It is really helpful if you can encourage your child to learn these spellings. Other Home Learning will be sent home on a Friday and expected back the following Wednesday. Both Class Teachers are in school on a Wednesday and can therefore share the marking of the work completed at home.

Personal, Social and Health Education

StarWe would like all the children in Class 2 to enjoy their school year and to develop emotionally and educationally. To encourage self-esteem we will be having a 'special person' who will change daily. We will also be discussing a variety of themes such as friendship, feelings, citizenship, growing and changing.

Behaviour: Golden Time

Sun and cloudWe have high expectations of behaviour at Barton and as a result we have our own classroom behaviour management system based on earning Golden Time. The whole school (children and adults) follow the same School Golden Rules, which the children have chosen, discussed and agreed to adhere to at the very beginning of term. The children own 30 minutes of Golden Time at the beginning of the week. If a child breaks any Golden Time Rules they receive a warning and if they continue and receive a second warning their name is moved from the sun, where they all start at the beginning of the day, onto the cloud. A further once sees them moved to the rain cloud, which means that 5 minutes of that week’s Golden Time is lost. The children are encouraged to behave in a way they would want others around them to behave.

PE Kit

Sports shoesPE will be taught on Mondays and Tuesdays. The children will need their full PE kits with them on these days. However, there may be occasions when the children will need their kit during other times in the week so it would be helpful if they had it with them the whole week.
