Home Learning

Home learningThe Home Learning tasks will go home on Friday, to be handed in the following Thursday. Your support with your child’s home learning is paramount to their development in school. The tasks, unless otherwise stated, should be done in the child's red homework book, and should be completed in pencil and presented with care. It's a good idea to have pencils, rubbers and glue available at home. Please sign your child's homework when they have completed it.

I will help the children to write in their books when the homework is due. Please support them by asking them what home learning they have been set on a Friday and help them plan their week. The tasks are meant to be done during the week, not all at one go, so it would help your child if you set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day to get the home learning done. If your child cannot do his/her homework they must bring a note from a parent in the home learning book, otherwise we will expect them to complete the work during their lunchtime.

Numeracy

MathsThere will always be at least two maths sheets to take home each week. The questions will be general questions and we encourage the children to have a go using any method they like (if they want to draw dots or sticks that's fine). I will ask them to do their working out in the homework book. If your child does use a piece of scrap paper please staple it in. I am more interested in how they got to the answer than the actual answer itself! If you and your child find that the work is too difficult, please let us know.

The children do need to know all their multiplication tables, and these will be tested on Fridays.

Literacy

BooksSpelling test will be on Thursdays. The literacy home learning task might for example be to write a story using the spelling words. In this case your child must only write for 20 minutes and stop even if they have not managed to use all the words or finish the story. They will slowly get better at it! The words should be underlined and used in sentences in a way that shows the children understand the meaning. I will vary this sometimes with a reading comprehension.

Other Work

WorldThis will depend on the IPC Unit which we are doing and will be clearly explained in their home learning books.

Behaviour: Golden Time

Sun and cloudWe have high expectations of behaviour at Barton and as a result we have our own classroom behaviour management system based on earning Golden Time. This system runs in a similar format throughout the school. The children own 25 minutes of Golden Time at the beginning of the week. If they are spoken to 3 times in one day about behaviour, then their name is moved under the cloud; a further warning sees them moved under the rain which means that 5 minutes of that week’s Golden Time is lost. Each day the system starts afresh. Occasionally a member of staff may move a child directly to the rain cloud.

There will be a zero tolerance approach to such behaviours as answering back and rudeness and such behaviours will lead to a rain cloud immediately. If a child who is already under the rain cloud has to be spoken to again for breaking the rules then they will be sent to the Head Teacher and will have to sign the Behaviour Book. When the child has signed the behaviour book three times a letter is sent home.

PE Kit

ShoesPE is on Mondays and Fridays. The children will need to have both outdoor and indoor PE kits with them. I will expect them to have white tops and dark blue or black shorts or track suit bottoms. Please no football shirts. I suggest children bring in their kits on Mondays and take them home on Fridays.

Healthy Living

StarPlease reinforce with the children the importance of washing hands before eating. They must also have a water bottle with them every day, which should go home to get washed every afternoon. I usually end up with a collection of bottles at the end of the week which I unfortunately end up throwing away, so please remind your children to take the bottles home!
